This section unveils the artistry behind premium, hand-crafted Bible enhancements. Each term represents a unique touch I personally apply to elevate your Scripture to an heirloom.
There are two methods of casing in a fine Bible: the first (‘paste off’) is a semi-automated process of gluing the cover to the endpapers of the book block, while the second (‘edge-lined’) is a specialized handcraft process using a cover that is more flexible and that gives a firm attachment of cover to book. The hand-made edge-lined cover is attached to the book block by means of a flap (of about half an inch in width) of the inner cover material being glued to the endpapers of the book. Because these covers are hand-made, each Bible is in effect unique – no two will look exactly the same.
You’ll be hard pressed to find the work ‘yapp’ in a dictionary. In Bible production, a volume which has a yapp or is yapped means that the leather cover overlaps some beyond the page edges, to provide protection for the gilded pages from sun and rain. Semi-yapp extends just a short way, but a full yapp binding will extend more and curve over the pages so that the yapped edges meet or almost do so when bent over to totally cover the gilded page edges. This adds an extra touch of luxury but it has a practical purpose as well - to extend the beauty and life of your Bible, but the yapp length is a personal preference as well.
A thin line, impressed into the cover by a leather working tool, outlining where the block is in relation to the yapp. This is a classic touch, made popular by many premium bible producers.
A plain gold or silver line or ‘frame’ stamped around the perimeter of the inside of the covers, that adds elegance to the cover and ‘frames’ the text block.
A line of stitching around the perimeter of many premium Bibles that adds beauty as well as strength to the cover. The color of the stitching can be one that matches the cover, or a color that provides contrast. The choice is yours.
A decorative finish to the page edges using colored dye and gilt foil to add richness and luster to the finished volume. Art gilt is not water resistant. Please use care when taking your Bible out in inclement weather or using it around liquids (e.g., water, coffee, tea, etc.). Note: art gilt can only be applied to new bibles. The oils and dirt on the page edges of used bibles will prevent the art gilt from applying evenly.
Every aspect of these enhancements flows from my hands to your Bible, creating a one-of-a-kind treasure that marries timeless techniques with your personal vision.
